LP Gas is safe when handled correctly — but gas leaks and improper installations cause preventable accidents every year. Follow these five critical safety rules to protect your family and property.
1. Never Ignore the Smell of Gas
LP Gas is deliberately odorised with ethyl mercaptan so leaks can be detected by smell. If you detect a gas smell:
- Do NOT switch on or off any electrical switches
- Do NOT light a match or lighter
- Open all windows and doors immediately
- Close the cylinder valve and leave the building
- Call your gas supplier or a certified gas engineer immediately
2. Only Use Certified Gas Equipment
Regulators, hoses, connectors and burners must carry SLS (Sri Lanka Standards) certification. Never use counterfeit or substandard gas fittings. Replace rubber gas hoses every two years or at the first sign of cracking or wear.
3. Ensure Proper Ventilation
LP Gas is heavier than air and will collect at floor level in poorly ventilated spaces. Kitchen gas installations must always have adequate ventilation to prevent dangerous gas accumulation.
4. Regular Professional Inspection
Have your gas pipeline system professionally inspected by a certified LP Gas engineer at least once a year. This includes checking regulator performance, testing for leaks, and verifying all safety devices are functional.
5. Install a Gas Leak Detector
A gas leak detector provides an early warning before gas concentrations reach dangerous levels. Position the sensor near floor level where LP Gas accumulates. Units with both audible alarm and automatic gas shut-off valve provide the best protection.
